How to Identify High Quality Furniture

No one wants to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on their new furniture only to discover that it falls apart after six months. Luckily, there are some easy ways to know what you are getting before it is too late.

The first indicator of quality furniture is substantial weight. How heavy is it? If you can easily pick it up, it might be made with particle board and other inferior materials.

Turn it over and inspect the seat frame. It should be reinforced with wooden blocks at each corner. Watch out for gauze and staples that could be hiding shoddy workmanship.

Pay attention to how it feels when you sit down. If the cushion is solid and immovable, it is made of solid foam that might settle over time, decreasing the life of your furniture. Properly made cushions are slightly springy with interior supportive webbing. On the other hand, you should definitely not be able to feel the hard edge of the frame underneath your thighs. The inside of your furniture is just as important as the way it looks on the outside.

The upholstery should have smooth, straight seams without puckering. Run your hand along the wood. Is it smooth and even in color? If not, that is an indication of poor quality work.
